Is Second Skin better than cling wrap?
Our understanding of how tattoos work and how they heal have developed over the years. It is without a doubt, the process of getting a tattoo is traumatic to the human body. Previously there were many steps that had to be considered and taken in order to protect and preserve the healing process. Fortunately, with advancements in the tattoo industry, an innovative solution - “second skin”, was made to address the vigorous healing journey.
Second skin is a clear medical grade adhesive bandage that acts as a breathable layer for the skin, protecting the area from infection and damage during the healing process.
Second skin allows the blood’s plasma to help in healing the tattoo. Because of this, tattoos tend to skip a lot of the itching and scabbing phases during the healing process.
Among the many advantages of second skin such as its flexibility and application, it’s comfortable to wear as it virtually moulds to your body and allows you to shower with ease. The only potential downside is a rare allergic reaction.
Cling wrap has been a popular option for protecting fresh tattoos for many years. It is inexpensive, readily available and easy to use. However, one major limitation with cling wrap is that it’s not breathable. This can cause a buildup of moisture fostering an optimal environment for bacteria to grow. This can increase the risk of infection and hinder the healing process. Additionally the application of cling wrap can be uncomfortable as it tends to stick to itself. Whilst it is still used to this day by some tattoo artists, it has become less popular as more artists discover the benefits of using second skin.
Cling wrap is also removed within hours after receiving the tattoo; so the skin is left unprotected during the remainder of the healing process.
Provided the wearer does not have an allergy to adhesives, second skin is arguably the greatest game-changer in the tattoo industry, making the healing process faster, safer and more efficient!
